An intense adaptation of Strindberg's
controversial play directed by Mike Figgis. A wealthy count's beautiful daughter starts a
dangerous flirtation with Jean, the count's foot servant, who happens to be engaged to the
cook. Any kind of relationship between the two is forbidden by the codes of conduct of the
class system, religious beliefs and the separation required between servant and master.
However, a battle of wills ensues as they challenge each other that neither has the nerve
to have sex, despite not liking each other. If the inevitable happened they would be
shunned by society.
