The Legends of Rita

The film tells the story of Rita Vogt, who leaves her life in the country and moves to the city. Infected by an atmosphere of cheerful anarchy, and seduced by love and a sense of justice, she decides to join the terrorists. Once she realises, however, that the Red Army Faction have failed, she flees to the GDR and goes underground. The Stasi furnish her with a 'legend' - meaning a new name and a new biography - but the rest is up to her. At first she lives the life of an ordinary working-class girl. Alone to start with, she soon finds friends. One ofher young colleagues is desperate to get to the West. Rita is desperate for a home. They fall in love. Not long after this, Rita is recognised. She is obliged to disappear overnight - and betray her girlfriend. She is given another 'legend' and starts afresh in another city. She falls in love again, maybe she'll even have a child. And then, all of a sudden, the Wall comes down.
